The quadcopter, little known in the drone market, is the X8500 from ACME.
The camera mount is an important feature. They fit standard sized action cameras. For example, you can use your GoPro Cam and capture stunning aerial photography and videos.
The drone can be easily controlled using the supplied remote control. You don’t need a smartphone for this, unfortunately there is no FPV mode in this model.
With the push of a button, you can activate the Home-To-Return function, in which the aircraft returns to the starting point.
The ACME X8500 drone often comes with the ACME VR06 action camera. This camera has a 12 megapixel resolution and a 2-inch display. Videos can be recorded in Ultra HD resolution.
Size, design and weight
Outwardly, the model is a bit like the Syma drone that we have already tested. However, the overall structure and construction has become much more robust and stable.
In addition, a rotor guard is attached. It protects the rotor blades from collisions with other objects and obstacles.
The integrated shock absorbers are especially cool and unusual. Thanks to this special holder, photos and videos do not shake even when the camera is securely mounted.
To be able to use the action camera with the ACME X8500, you need to open the bracket, insert the camera, and secure it with a padlock.
The corresponding mount only fits the camera without the protective cover.
Camera, memory and FPV live image transmission
As mentioned, most stores have a corresponding action camera. This is the ACME VR06 model. This camera has a 1050mAh battery and a maximum runtime of 90 minutes at maximum resolution. The camera takes 2 to 3 hours to charge and the camera usually comes with 2 batteries.
With it, you can record 30fps with pixel density up to 4K. Pictures are usually captured at 12 megapixels. However, the resolution values can be set in different ways in the menu.
The camera accommodates Micro SD memory cards up to 32 GB. Be sure to format it before using it.
In general, the camera is very simple in design and execution, but at the same time it is compact, inexpensive and of high quality. But you can also use a GoPro camera if the ACME VR06 action camera isn’t right for you.
Battery, range and flight time
A lithium polymer battery with a total capacity of 1200 mAh is installed.
The drone model itself flies up to 10 minutes. The remote controller extends up to about 100 meters, but the transmission range also depends on whether there are many objects between the remote controller and the quadcopter.
Although the ACME X8500 is quite large compared to other models, it is no longer easy to see it at a distance of 100 meters. in the USA, certain laws also apply to drones, so the drone shouldn’t fly out of sight, and since it doesn’t have FPV anyway, 100m range is, in our opinion, quite sufficient, at least for this model.
For us personally, 10 minutes of flight is too little, especially since the charging time is 150 minutes, so a discharged battery can be fully charged again.
The quadcopter completely self-stabilizes in the air, for this there is a multi-axis gyroscope in the model. If you take your hands off the joystick, the ACME X8500 will automatically balance through its internal feedback system, even if there is a headwind.
Even if you perform a trick at the touch of a button, the drone will automatically return to a stable flying position.
For tricks and 360-degree somersaults, there is a corresponding button on the remote control with which somersaults are performed.
A particularly interesting feature for beginners is the compass mode, in which the drone always flies in the specified direction, regardless of how the model’s head is oriented, which is why this mode is also called “headless mode”.
For example, if you want to fly straight, but the quadcopter is “looking” from the front to the right, it will still fly forward.
Pros and cons
The ACME X8500 drone is special compared to other models, but it also has several disadvantages. To make your purchasing decision easier, we have again listed the most important facts for you.
- Holder for typical action cameras in standard size for great photo and video recording
- Entries are not blurred because there are shock absorbers on the bracket
- Cool 360 degree rotation at the touch of a button
- You can set different speed modes
- The remote control has a small screen that lists the most important data.
- The maximum flight range of this drone is about 100 meters.
- Return to Home function – the quadcopter returns fully automatically at the touch of a button
- FPV mode not available
- No gimbal system
This drone can be recommended to anyone who would like to have a quadcopter with which any action camera can be used, there is an additional bracket with shock absorbers.
However, there is no FPV mode or gimbal system here. The VR06 camera, which is often included, does have Wi-Fi, but the range is quite limited and the latency is too high in our opinion to make decent FPV flights.
Flight times are also not that good compared to loading times. The problem could be solved by purchasing several batteries.
For beginners who already have the right action camera, the ACME X8500 drone is a great fit. Not only do many camera models fit, the drone also has a gyroscope, a safety bar and a compass mode (headless). Beginners have no major hurdles and can approach flying slowly and flexibly.
