The very cheap action camera that has been on the market since mid-2017 appears to have a very good value for money, as you can get a 4K camera with 14 megapixels for about € 100. But is the Rollei Actioncam 530 really worth the money and if there are better alternatives, you can find out in our Rollei benchmark report and video review.

Completeness – what’s inside?

Technical details and features

The ActionCam looks sturdy, compact and waterproof down to about 40 meters. Together with the battery, it weighs only 79 g and has the minimum dimensions of 6.1 cm wide, 4.2 cm high and 3.4 cm deep. Installed a 14-megapixel photo sensor with a 170 degree wide-angle lens.

This way, you can fully capture the wider landscape and create better images at dusk, as more light sources can enter the sensor and the image looks brighter. Unfortunately, the lens does not have a zoom function. However, the camera has gyroscopic image stabilization. Here are some shots of the Rollei 530, all of which have not been fully edited.

Underwater photo test Rollei 530 photo 1

The photo shows a faint light at a depth of 10 m. Image quality at a depth of 20 mThe camera also has a speaker and microphone. The latter never works very well with action cameras, especially in a waterproof case, and the sound quality is poor. However, the fact is that sound does not play a big role in underwater recordings anyway.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are available for wireless control. Both wireless systems have a range of about 10 meters. The package includes a Bluetooth remote control with which you can control the camera (start / stop recording, take pictures, etc.).

With a fully charged 1050mAh battery, the camera lasts almost 35 minutes when recording 4K video and 75 minutes in Full HD. With a charging current of 2A, it will take a little over 2 hours to fully charge.

There are several different frame rate and resolution settings available for videos:

  • 4K or 3840 x 2160 @ 30fps
  • 2704 x 1520 also at 30fps
  • 1920 x 1080 30/60 fps possible
  • 1280 x 720 also possible at 30/60 fps

Mini Action Camera Video Resolution

The Rollei Actioncam 530 does not have built-in internal memory for storing recorded files, but has a microSDHC card slot that can be used for cards up to 128 GB (class 10).

Comfortable work and recording

You must fully charge the battery before use, as it is only half charged due to storage voltage. In the meantime, you can devote yourself to installing the app so that later you can control the camera over Wi-Fi. To do this, you just need to download the Rollei 530-630 app from the app store.

In general, the operation is not particularly difficult. The menu navigation and structure isn’t too cluttered and it’s actually pretty clear.

Sometimes the connection may be lost, but this is rather an exception. If you control the action camera via Wi-Fi or remote control, we recommend a maximum distance of 5-7 meters. This distance is usually sufficient.

Pros and cons

When evaluating the advantages and disadvantages, you should never forget about the price of this action camera, it can be purchased for about 100 euros. Once again, we have presented you the most important positive and negative facts:

  • High-quality, high-definition 4K camera
  • WiFi and Bluetooth function
  • The action camera is lightweight, compact and easy to use.
  • 170 degree wide angle lens
  • Quite cheap camera
  • Up to 128GB storage (Class 10 SD card)

  • Battery life with Ultra HD is about 35 minutes.

We’ve now offered a number of alternatives, but the Rollei Actioncam 530 is of course still a very good choice if you can do without a remote control.

Therefore, we recommend that you buy a camera if you are not making full use of the wireless functions or if you only control the camera directly. It even has a TFT screen on the back and you can view the photos and videos you have taken directly.

What are the alternatives to the Rollei Actioncam 530?

If you don’t like the drawbacks at all, you can look for cheap alternatives, we have selected the best alternative action cameras for you:

Action camera APEMAN 85

The Apeman action camera is available for around 85 euros. It has nearly 1000 customer reports and 4 stars, which is very good quality. Our test showed it too. The price is cheaper than Rollei Actioncam. It also has a waterproof housing up to 30m depth.

It houses a 20-megapixel photo sensor, which also produces high-definition 4K video images. In our opinion, the price / quality ratio is better than the Rollei Cam.

SJCAM SJ8 Pro 4K / 60PFS 270

SJCAM SJ8 Pro, by contrast, is significantly more expensive. The high price tag of 270 euros is due to the fact that the camera is equipped with the latest built-in chipset, so it can create 4K high-resolution video at up to 60 frames per second.

In this review, we dwelled on the clear advantages of the SJCAM SJ8 Pro in more detail.

GoPro Hero 5 Black 300

If you decide to invest € 300 in an action camera, you might want to consider not choosing an “elite brand” of action cameras right away. GoPro dominates this market area just as DJI dominates the drone market.

The manufacturer knows what it is doing and you can’t go wrong with your purchase. The GoPro Hero 5 Black is available for around € 300. It is waterproof up to 10 meters without a casing, but can be extended with an optional casing. It has 12 megapixels and can generate around 30 frames per second at 4K resolution.

Compared to the SJCAM SJ8, it seems inferior purely in terms of technical data, but probably more durable because there are hardly any better quality action cameras than GoPro. High quality workmanship is very important here.
