The very popular Mavic Pro 1 is followed by the Mavic 2 in two different versions: the Mavic 2 Pro and the Mavic 2 Zoom. Both models are slightly different, but each has different application possibilities.

The Mavic 2 Pro (€ 1,449) is 200 € more expensive than the zoom version (€ 1249) because it has a very high quality Hasselblad camera attached to it, which should produce forbidden good photos and videos. We’ve taken a close look at the two drones, and in our Mavic 2 Pro benchmark, we’ll show you what you can really expect from this drone in practice.

You can see my detailed review of the Mavic 2 Pro here:

Mavic 2 Pro: foldable, small and compact

Like its predecessor, the Mavic 2 Pro is a foldable drone that will fit into any travel backpack, no matter the size. We ordered the Fly-More combo package right away, as we travel a lot and therefore can transport the drone optimally. The package also includes a replacement propeller, two extra batteries and a car charger.

When folded, both quadcopters are about 21 cm long, 9 cm wide and almost 8.5 cm high.Unfolded, they are 32 cm long, 24 cm wide and 8.4 cm high.

There is a display on the remote again, which can be very useful in an emergency if communication with the cell phone is lost in order to return the drone home. The remote fits cell phones with a screen diagonal of up to 6 inches.

The video image is transmitted in Full HD (1080p) format. In addition, the small joysticks can be unscrewed, so the folded controller is very small and compact, and the joysticks are protected from breaking.

Both the Mavic Pro 2 and Mavic 2 Zoom have 8GB of internal storage that you can store your photos and videos in. You can use it to record 4k videos for 10 minutes or 30 minutes of Full HD movies. The data can then be read through the USB-C connection and transferred to your laptop. Unfortunately, it cannot be used to charge batteries.

Mavic 2 Pro USB-C Port

Of course, the drones have an additional slot where you can insert SD cards up to 128GB and write / read speeds up to UHS-I class 3.

Mavic 2 Pro SD Card Slot

The following models are supported (they are listed by DJI on their website):

  • 32 GB Sandisk V30
  • Sandisk Extreme V30 Pro 64G
  • Sandisk Extreme Pro V30 128G
  • Sandisk Extreme V30
  • Sandisk Extreme Pro V30
  • Kingston

Installing and removing the rotor blades is child’s play, you can also replace them at any time in a few seconds. They can also be folded down to keep the drone small and compact.

The battery has a capacity of 3850 mAh and is fully charged in about 45 minutes using the included charger.

Mavic 2 Pro camera sensor: photo and video quality

The only real distinguishing feature of the DJI Mavic 2 models is the built-in camera. Hasselblad’s 1-inch CMOS sensor is built into the DJI Mavic Pro 2, while the zoom version has a smaller 1 / 2.3-inch sensor and a 24-48mm zoom lens. Apart from the DJI Inspire models, this is by far the best camera a drone manufacturer has ever installed.

Mavic 2 Pro Hasselblad Camera

Thanks to the 1-inch sensor, you can make incredibly good photos and videos, even in low light, as the sensor can determine how much light should be collected from the environment.

This provides a better resolution as well as a larger dynamic range, resulting in slightly better photo and movie recording quality. This allows for truly impressive color depth and depth of field. Images and videos look even more realistic. The camera supports the following video formats:

  • 4K at up to 30fps
  • 2.7k up to 60fps
  • Full HD up to 120fps
  • You can record in MP4 or MOV

Photos can be captured in JPG format as well as RAW DNG format at 20 megapixels.

Novice pilots will probably only fly in automatic mode, but this manual aperture control opens up tremendous possibilities for professional photographers and filmmakers.

Another great feature is the Dlog M10 bit-color capture. Without getting into technical details, it should be said that the Mavic 2 Pro can record over a billion discrete colors, while the Mavic 2 Zoom is “only” 16 million. This difference can also be seen by novice pilots when they later look at it on the big screen.

First of all, demanding drone pilots can get the most out of their photos and videos as the mentioned features support optimal post-processing.

Test photo 2 Mavic Pro 2The river is photographed from above

The Mavic 2 Zoom has a slightly “inferior” camera, but the Mavic 2 Pro cannot scale. The Mavic 2 Zoom has 2x optical zoom (24-48mm) as well as 2x digital zoom. When recording 4k video, you can zoom in 2x lossless and 4x lossless in Full HD. With the latest software update, DJI has provided an additional 2x digital zoom, so a total of 2x optical and 4x digital zoom can be performed (for Full HD recordings!).

As we found out in our tests, this zoom feature is an absolute killer that will be the decisive argument in favor of one pilot or another. Using the zoom, you can create incredibly powerful videos. In addition, the zoom effect of the cart, which was once created by Alfred Hitchcock, can give your videos a really cool look (only available in the zoom version!).

In our opinion, the smaller image sensor can be completely neglected unless you are a professional photographer or filmmaker, as this zoom feature can be used over an incredibly diverse range. Even beginners can create cinematic recordings with them.

From the company’s point of view, this is a smart solution, allowing the pilot to choose between one of the two models, but we think it’s a shame that there isn’t a Moulares camera system that can take advantage of both cameras. But perhaps in the near future there will be another model that meets this requirement. The DJI Inspire 2 has interchangeable cameras, even if it’s from a different league of course.

Range, flight time and air behavior

From the very first flight attempts, we noticed that DJI was tinkering with sensors and flight behavior again. It just got even better and, in our opinion, is almost unrivaled as the drone stands in the air like a chiseled one and can withstand even stronger gusts of wind.

Mavic 2 Pro Flight Test

Compared to other drones, the DJI Mavic Pro 2 has significantly improved sensors that provide a much better flight experience and more balanced stability in the air.

The Mavic 2 Pro has a total of 10 obstacle sensors from all directions, even from above. This further enhances flight safety and is a great feature, especially for beginners. Even in narrow spaces or alleyways, the Vision Positioning System ensures a safe flight position without collisions. The slightest movement is immediately recorded and balanced by the vision system using small cameras under the Mavic Pro 2.

Mavic 2 Pro Obstacle Sensors

Many drones can no longer fly as safely and steadily as the GPS signal disappears. Thanks to the visual positioning system, the Mavic Pro 2 can be operated very safely and comfortably even without GPS; it does not move when hovered, but instead maintains its position permanently.

We were unable to achieve the stated flight time of just under 31 minutes in practice. When fully loaded, we were able to achieve an effective flight time of just under 28.5 minutes. The previous model could only stay aloft for about 23 minutes. Since we always have two extra batteries in our luggage, we ca
n stay aloft for almost 90 minutes. However, half an hour is definitely a very decent price.

The maximum climb speed without wind is 5 meters per second in sport mode and 4 meters per second in normal mode. In both modes, the rate of descent remains unchanged – 3 m / s. As mentioned, the Mavic Pro 2 has a top speed of 72 kilometers per hour in Sport mode. The maximum rotation can occur at a speed of 200 degrees / s.

The manufacturer sets a maximum flight range of 8 km, although in the USA, according to current legislation, it is allowed to fly only within sight (in practice, mostly 300 m). We ran the Mavic Pro 2 in another country outside of Europe and we had no problems up to 5500 meters. There were no delays or stuttering during transmission.

The depth of field and automatic adjustment to changing lighting conditions are truly impressive and work great at all times. The camera is stabilized with a 3-axis gimbal and works very well. Even in sport mode, there is never any shaking in the video. In addition, the propellers can no longer be seen in photos and videos. Here you can already see a sample of the footage, I have yet to edit the full video review.

New flight modes for even more cinematic recordings

In addition to the already familiar Flight Modes, DJI offers two new features with the updated Active Track 2.0 and Hyperlapse features that will make drone pilots’ hearts beat faster.

The new Active Track should be able to calculate the movement of objects 3 seconds ahead so that the quadcopter does not lose visibility and communication, even if obstacles suddenly appear that cover the drone. We can say that this function works really flawlessly and does not lose sight of us even at higher speeds and with sudden changes in direction.

DJI did a great job with the Hyperlapse feature. This new Airplane Mode is incredibly versatile and allows you to create great (no movie editing software!) Videos. Hypelapse mode can be used in three different ways (sub-modes).

  • In “Free” mode, the DJI Mavic 2 Pro automatically creates time-lapse recordings, while it flies independently and you don’t have to do anything else.
  • If the “Circle” mode is activated, a time-lapse video is created, and the drone simultaneously flies in a circle.
  • There is also a “Course Lock” mode. For example, a drone locks onto a point on the horizon and flies straight ahead very quickly. This feature has also been available on other DJI models.
  • Mavic 2 Pro advantages and disadvantages

As with all drones, there are both good and bad sides, although it is really difficult for us to find anything negative in new models.

    • 20MP camera with 4K video quality @ 30fps and 2.7K @ 60fps
    • The maximum video transmission rate is 100 Mbps.
    • Supports DNG (RAW format)
    • Foldable drone – easy to transport anywhere
    • Withstands strong gusts of wind
    • A comprehensive safety package including a visual positioning system that ensures a very stable flight position even if the GPS system fails.
    • Extensive flight functions and modes for better flight
    • Transmission distance 8 km
    • Flight time strong 28 minutes
    • Mature, newly updated suspension system
    • Also ideal for beginners – the drone will automatically fly around obstacles.

    • Quite expensive

Mavic 2 Pro: the best drone on the market?

Anyone familiar with the previous model, the DJI Mavic Pro, will love the successor.

Extensive security features and a Hasselblad camera make the new DJI flagship a real miracle.Long flight times are also beneficial for photographers as they don’t have to stop as often.

    >> Buy Cheap Mavic 2 Pro * <<

For the first time in a drone camera, the new Dlog-M color profile has been integrated into the compact Mavic Pro 2 travel drone. Photographers and videographers who love post-processing their images get their money here.

But there are also many new small parts that make everyday use and flying with the drone easier, such as the unscrewing knobs on the remote control or very sophisticated sensors.

With the DJI Mavic 2 Pro, DJI has brought a quadcopter to the market that can prove itself in all respects against its competitors. No wonder many manufacturers have already tried to recreate the previous model.

We have a very clear purchase recommendation! If you have any further questions about the quadcopter, use the comment feature at the bottom of the page!
