ATTENTION, this test report is regularly expanded and updated. These are just our first steps with the DJI Mavic Mini 2 🙂 So check back often.

The DJI Mini 2 is the successor to the DJI Mavic Mini. Compared to the previous model, it has several improved features.

The “Mavic” is no longer featured in the name, instead the drone is simply referred to as the DJI Mini 2. The price is reasonable and ranges from 450 to 500 euros depending on the store. The model also uses a very powerful 2250 mAh battery.

This allows the drone to stay aloft for up to 31 minutes. The transmitter is sufficient to control the drone at a distance of up to 10 kilometers.

The DJI Mavic Mini and the DJI Mini 2 drone look very similar, but the next model has a much higher speed and can climb up to 4000 meters.

We have thoroughly tested the DJI Mini 2 drone and give our feedback on the model in this review.

Other technical characteristics

Before you start using the DJI Mini 2 drone, you should of course read the manual carefully. We did this to avoid serious mistakes. In the next section of the text, we will introduce you to the technical specifications of the DJI Mini 2.

An accessory box is included in the delivery. Of course, there is a power bank, a charging cable, and a connecting cable to connect the remote to your smartphone. Includes 2 cables for a smartphone. One cable from type C to type C and one from micro USB to type C. If you are using iphone, you can use the version built into the control system. As with other DJI brand models.

Of course, there is a hub for charging the battery in the kit. This charging station can hold 3 whole batteries and charge them at the same time. Compared to the previous model, these are brand new flight batteries developed by DJI. That’s why a longer flight time of up to 31 minutes is possible, even if the drone has significantly more power than the DJI Mavic Mini.

As befits DJI models, the Mini 2 has a GPS system. The DJI Mini 2 can perfectly hold its position above this. If the GPS signal is not working, the drone has several sensors on its belly underneath, such as an infrared port and a small camera for optical positioning.

Powerful motors provide wind resistance up to 40 kilometers per hour. At this wind speed, the wind is clearly audible. The drone also reaches 57.6 km / h at top speed, which is really great for this small aircraft!

Remote control

Much to our surprise, the DJI mini 2 remote controller looks exactly like the spark of the Mavic Air 2. In our experience, this remote controller is very easy to use and much more convenient than other remote controls. In the previous model, the remote seemed small and the smartphone could be attached from the bottom. With this remote, everything is different. Because the smartphone is attached on top and the spark offers significantly more area and volume to hold it.

From the top, you can pull out the holder, grip the smartphone and insert the Type C plug to connect the remote control to the mobile phone. The cover of the remote control is very high quality. The control knobs can be screwed in and removed again. This time, even a metal thread is installed.

This remote uses OcuSync 2.0 with an incredible 10km range. Of course, in the USA you have to operate the drone within sight, as required by law. But you should also consider that the larger the specified range, the more reliable and stable the connection between the drone, remote control and smartphone will be. It definitely uses smart technology.

The DJI Mini 2 drone can of course be unfolded and folded.Since it already has ideal dimensions in its normal state, it is extremely compact when folded. So it even fits in a trouser pocket. The DJI Mini 2 drone is ideal for those who love to travel.

Weight also pleasantly surprised us. This is only 249 grams and thus 1 gram lower than the legal weight, which is due to some obligations and prohibitions.

For example, a DJI Mavic 2 drone does not need to be tagged. This is only mandatory for a weight of 250 grams and does not apply.

In addition, drones weighing less than 250 grams can operate at altitudes up to 30 meters in FPV mode with video goggles, even without a spotter.

Flying over residential buildings is not prohibited or even prohibited if the drone weighs less than 250 grams.

However, some rules still apply to the DJI Mini 2 as the model sends live video signals, so consent is required to capture people or property.

The drone is made in bright white and is very similar to the previous model in other aspects. A camera with a suspension system is attached in the lower front part. Folded dimensions 140mm x 82mm x 57mm. When unfolded, it is 160 mm x 202 mm x 55 mm.

An on / off button is located on the underside of the drone to turn the device on and off. If you look at the back, there is a kind of trunk lid where you can insert the battery. Below is the Type-C connector on the left and the memory card slot on the right.

Thanks to the built-in gimbal camera, you can take great photos up to 12 megapixels, as well as record 4K, i.e. UHD video. The previous model only managed 2.7K video at 30 frames per second. The stabilization, of course, is done as usual along 3 axes. As a result, videos appear especially smooth, without any stuttering or strong vibrations.

When you take photos, they are saved in Jpeg or RAW format using this model. You can choose your preferred file format from the menu. The ISO settings leave nothing to be desired. They can be set from 100 to 3200.

In the test, the photos and videos were definitely impressive. We were particularly impressed by the video and once again reaffirm the high quality that the DJI manufacturer demonstrates in the development of the models. Video and photo recordings look sharp, colorful and detailed.

Accumulator battery

Before you start, of course, you need to fully charge the battery and deploy the wings of the DJI Mini 2. Only then will you have a successful start. We recommend charging the battery to 100% anyway before your first flight.

The DJI Mini 2 uses a 2250mAh lithium-ion battery in 2S format, which operates at 7.7V, so the battery can store 17.32Wh of energy. Basically, the battery is only slightly better than the energy storage of the previous model. However, the DJI Mini 2 performed much better.

Flight behavior and drone test

Before embarking on our first flight with the DJI Mini 2 drone, we were very excited.

Of course, we have already tested many drones from the Chinese manufacturer DJI, but it was a rather windy day that day, and the light weight made me think.

After all, this is not a cheap drone, but an expensive model that should not be destroyed right away on first launch. For the drone test, we were looking for a large free area in the field.

We were able to start safely there. The DJI Mini 2 took off without any problems and completely balanced itself, even though there was one or another strong gust of wind.

Even when we flew, we had the feeling that the quadcopter was firmly and securely in t
he air, as if the model had been nailed to the sky. We were particularly impressed with the high level of performance despite the low weight of 249 grams.

Brushless motors have a lot to offer and can also fully compensate for average wind speeds.

As a pilot, you can easily concentrate on the different flight maneuvers you want to perform and calmly make adjustments in the app or view data.

When the control sticks are released, the drone completely brakes itself, stops and maintains a position both from the perspective of the aircraft and at altitude.

Control commands are executed immediately and accurately. During the flight, we could see that the acceleration is enormous and the drone reaches a significantly higher flight speed than the previous model.

Pros and cons

  • Long life battery and long flight time (30 to 31 minutes)
  • Excellent value for money from a reputable manufacturer
  • Very good flight behavior
  • 4K camera – great photo and video recordings
  • Weight less than 250g – no labeling required

  • No special drawbacks are known yet

We are also very happy with this DJI drone. Despite its light weight, it can be operated extremely safely and reliably even at high wind speeds. Even as a beginner, you will quickly become familiar with the model and will be able to fly like a true master. As usual with DJI models, the recordings are of a very high standard.

Of course, there is more that we are missing with this drone, but some of the features like 4K video recording or 100Mbps data rate that we wanted were fulfilled. Of course, some features are still missing, such as obstacle detection or other intelligent flight modes.

Ultimately, the price is also in a range that is within the budget of many potential buyers and is extremely cheap, we think. The DJI Mini 2 drone offers many technologies for little money and has convinced us. Therefore, we have a clear recommendation to buy.

A video review will follow as soon as I have time to cut everything out 🙂
