With its stable flight behavior, gesture control, high-quality material handling and attractive design, the DJI Spark scores particularly well in our test.

The Spark is by far the best mini drone we’ve tested.

And while this drone requires a significantly larger budget than other drones of this size, it really is well worth the money!

In the DJI Spark benchmark, we explain in detail what it can do and what to look out for:

DJI Spark: features and innovations

The DJI Spark, being such a small drone, has a lot to offer.

For example, there are new Intelligent Flight Modes that we didn’t even know about from other DJI models.

Gesture controlLike the DJI Mavic Pro, this small mini drone has sophisticated and reliable gesture controls, with which you can control the Spark without a remote control and take selfies.

If you want to fly in tight spaces, Spark is perfect for that.

It has obstacle detection and is extremely safe in the air thanks to its visual positioning system. The scope of delivery also includes 4 shock absorbers to protect the rotors.

If you are out for a walk, you do not need to worry about more or less strong wind gusts. In our test, the DJI Spark maintained its position even with wind gusts of up to 40 kilometers per hour, even though it weighs only 300 g.

The fact that the drone weighs so little, despite the huge technical equipment, is of course a clear plus!

Your top speed in Sport mode is 50 kilometers per hour. We think this is a very good top speed for such a small drone.

DJI Spark Camera

Safe flight behavior, high-quality camera combined with intelligent flight modes make DJI Spark the ideal drone for beginners and advanced users.

DJI Spark can record videos at 1920 × 1080p at 30fps and photos with a maximum image size of 3968 × 2976 pixels. The range of rotation of the camera is 90 degrees from the horizontal to the vertical of the field of view downward. The mechanical suspension system ensures uninterrupted photo and video shooting without hesitation.

Below is a quick overview of the latest features and other special features:

  • Gesture control
  • Vision Positioning System
  • Obstacle detection
  • Take a selfie
  • TapFly
  • ActiveTrack
  • QuickShot Modes (Circle, Droni, Helix, Rocket)
  • FPV flight possible with FPV goggles (not included). The DJI Google FPV Goggles are especially suitable for this.

DJI Spark Scope of Supply and Processing

We have the DJI Spark Fly More Combo version which contains a total of 2 batteries, a practical travel bag and a multi-functional charger with which you can charge up to 3 batteries at the same time.
Buy DJI Spark
Of course, the kit includes a remote controller, a power supply for a charger, a USB cable and a DJI Spark drone.

It has a microSD card slot, but only a 16GB microSD card is included. Here you can use UHS-1-SDXC memory cards up to 64GB.

DJI recommends microSD cards from Sandisk, Kingston, and Samsung.

Thanks to its small size, Spark can be quickly and easily taken wherever you go. However, compared to the DJI Mavic Pro, the wings do not fold. However, the propellers can be folded.

With the supplied 1480mAh battery, we achieved a flight time of around 13-15 minutes in the DJI Spark benchmark. The maximum flight time naturally depends on how busy the small drone is during operating hours.

The design, material quality and workmanship are typical of the DJI market leader. You can see right away from which company little Spark was born. Available in green, yellow, blue, red and white.

Intelligent flight modes

DJI Spark has a number of features, including intelligent flight modes that many other drones lack. This, of course, makes Spark unique and special. Next comes the once-intelligent Flight Modes to help you get that special shot.

Gesture control

Gesture modesDJI Spark can also be operated with gesture control without a remote controller.

If you are in Gesture Mode and the two LEDs on the front panel are green, it means the drone has recognized you as a human. The drone can now be launched manually.

If you reach out now, DJI Spark’s sensors will recognize and track your hand movements. Up, down, right and left.

Take a selfie

Spark takes a selfie when you move your fingers over the window icon or square in front of your face.

The drone’s LEDs then start blinking red quickly, and then you have about 3-4 seconds for the Spark to take a photo. Photo taken in Ultra HD 3968 × 2976 pixels.

If you raise your hands up, you will signal the DJI Spark to land. It then lowers its height and now flies at about chest level and flies towards you. Keep your palm about 50 centimeters below the drone and it will land on top of it.

Follow Me Mode

The drone can be switched to Follow Me mode using gesture controls. To do this, the person in front who recognizes the DJI Spark must wave his hand. Spark takes up a position of about 3 meters and from that moment follows a recognizable person.

In our experience, Follow Me works very well on flat surfaces, but if you add a lot of tilt, the drone can lose sight of you.

Quick Shot Modes

If you control Spark with your remote, you can use 4 very interesting Intelligent Flight Modes, so called Quick Shot Modes. Thanks to this, you can create various images and videos in an original way.

Drone mode

In Droni mode, the DJI Spark slowly takes off and returns back at the same time. The distances for this simple but very useful mode can be set in the app.

You don’t need to worry about camera operation while flying in Drone mode.

Circular mode

In circular mode, the drone flies around you in the radius you specify. This allows you to record videos very smoothly and accurately. A similar feature is the POI feature, which you probably know from other drone models and which was already in the DJI Phantom models.

Spiral mode

In this mode, the DJI Spark rotates around you in the same way as the circle mode, but changes its height. The movement resembles an upward spiral.

Rocket mode

In rocket mode, the DJI Spark moves vertically upward. Spark takes over the camera work. This creates a great bird’s eye view.In the app you will find all the settings, such as the maximum height for rocket mode.

TapFly Mode

In TapFly mode, you can select a point on the horizon to which the drone will fly.

The speed of Dji Spark can be adjusted using the virtual slider in the app.

Sport mode

In sport mode, the DJI Spark has a top speed of 50 kilometers per hour. In this mode, note that the rotors are visible in the video footage as the drone flies at a steeper angle when nodding in order to be able to reach higher speeds.

Obstacle detection does not work in Sport mode, but is worth paying attention to in Sport mode.

DJI Spark test conclusion

In our opinion, the DJI Spark is the best mini drone and selfie drone you can get on the market right now. This is clearly not a good deal, but it really is worth it!
Buy DJI Spark
The fact is that thanks to its compact size, it can be transported quickly and easily anywhere.
and create high-resolution photos and videos.

New flight modes round out the overall package, so to speak. Our only complaint is the shorter flight times compared to other drones from DJI.

However, you can also get the combo version and charge multiple batteries and discharge them at the same time behind the scenes.

All in all, DJI brings you an ingenious mini drone in one
very good value for money.
