Drone for GoPro: the best drone for GoPro cameras

When it comes to buying high quality ActionCam cameras, GoPro is the top brand. Since you can expect high recording quality and durability when purchasing a camera from a manufacturer, it certainly makes sense to buy a drone for GoPro cameras.

Drone GoPro Karma

There are a large number of drones on the market that are compatible with such a camera. This includes the GoPro Karma drone developed by GoPro itself.

After some of the improvements that have been made to the drone developed by the manufacturer ActionCam, we finally came to a very positive result with the GoPro Karma.

Depending on the price, there are different options for equipping this model. For example, this drone is available in combination with the GoPro Hero 5 Black for around € 1300-1400.

When fully loaded, the GoPro Karma weighs 1,900g but is powered by extremely powerful brushless motors and has a powerful battery. According to the manufacturer, you can fly a fully loaded GoPro Karma drone in about 20 minutes. However, in our GoPro Karma test, we only had about 16-17 minutes, which was probably also related to our flight behavior. Charging the flight battery takes approximately 120 minutes.

In our opinion, the Karma is currently the best aircraft for perfect video recording with a GoPro camera as it was developed directly by the GoPro camera manufacturer.

Another drone for GoPro: Walkera QR-X350

If you want to fish in low-cost segments, we highly recommend the Walkera QR-350 quadcopter.

It is compatible with GoPro cameras GoPro 3, 3+, 4 and flies safely, stably and reliably. Of course, there is no DJI quality here, but for beginners this model is ideal.

It features a G-2D brushless gimbal that holds your GoPro camera in position.

Numerous functions and assistive systems that guarantee smooth flight and clear video recordings are also an advantage. Walkera QR-X350 Pro can also perform cool stunts, it is fast and maneuverable in the air.

For a low price (around 400-500 euros) you also get GPS, home function and airplane mode, which make it especially easy to create beautiful videos. This is IOC (Intelligent Orientation Control) mode. In other drones, it is also known as “headless flight mode”. If active, the position of the camera and the front of the drone no longer matters. The quadcopter simply follows the movements of the control stick no matter how it is currently in the air.

3DR Solo drone

The 3DR Solo drone is perfect for you if you are looking for a drone that works especially well with GoPro cameras.

The quadcopter has been specially designed to be compatible with GoPro cameras only. For development, GoPro and 3D Robotics have teamed up to design and manufacture this remarkable aircraft. Which, of course, has many advantages. For example, the gimbal is precisely designed for GoPro devices that cameras can be installed quickly and effortlessly.

Shaky and flawless images are also guaranteed when you use the 3DR Solo drone in conjunction with GoPro cameras.

3DR Solo drone gimbal specially for GoPro

GoPro ActionCams HERO3, 3+, 4 Silver and Black are ideal for a 3-axis gimbal. The signal from the camera is recorded through a pin on the gimbal head, transmitted to the drone, and the drone sends a live image directly to your remote controller and smartphone or tablet.

The live image has an HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, but the full image quality that you preset is recorded to the memory card.

Since the maximum payload of the gimbal head is only 420 grams, it is not possible to use cameras other than ActionCams for this drone. This can be a disadvantage. But if you’re looking for a GoPro-only drone anyway, then the 3DR Solo is perfect.

Unfortunately the GoPro Hero 5 series does not work with this gimbal head because the connections are not compatible. However, if you have a 3rd or 4th generation GoPro, you can easily capture great photos and videos because, thanks to the precise interaction between the GoPro and the drone system, you have access to all camera settings and functions without having to dismantle the ActionCam. …

Photo and video recordings can be launched during the flight via a smartphone or tablet. This makes the 3DR Solo drone one of the best flying devices for GoPro cameras.

3DR Solo Drone Specifications

  • Flight time: up to 25 minutes, but only 20 minutes with gimbal
  • Weight with gimbal and GoPro: 1800 g
  • Speed: up to 90 kilometers per hour
  • Range (WiFi): up to 800 meters in open space
  • Battery: 5200mAh Lipo

  • 5200mAh battery
  • Flight Battery Charger
  • Remote control battery charger

The 3DR Solo drone does not have a GoPro camera. So if you don’t have a suitable home, you will have to budget for the appropriate ActionCam and buy it!

Yuneec Q500 Typhoon: a safe drone for your GoPro

A great value for money GoPro drone is the Yuneec Q500 Typhoon, which we can highly recommend to you. It is perfect for GoPro 3, 3+ and 4, as well as the Black Edition.

Typhoon is very stable in the air and produces clean, high quality recordings. The fact that this drone produces such high quality videos is mainly due to the high quality of the gimbal and camera position. What we particularly like is the portable Steadygrip G that is included in the box. You can also use it to create regular selfie videos or photos.

In our Typhoon Q500 review, we compared all the pros and cons of this drone. It is often sold in conjunction with a Yuneec-designed 4K camera, but you can also just purchase the base model without it for a lower price and then install a suitable GoPro camera.

DJI Phantom 2: a vintage drone for your GoPro

If you look at the fast paced drone market and look at the release date of the DJI Phantom 2, you can definitely call this quadcopter an old-timer. However, it is perfect for some GoPro cameras. The gimbal has been specially designed to match and blend in with your GoPro ActionCam Series 3 and 4 cameras. If you don’t already have a GoPro, we recommend the Phantom 3 Pro or Phantom 4 as they have better cameras.

Why are we listing this drone here at all? Meanwhile, it just has a very good value for money and is often used with a suitable camera holder. But even as a new product, prices have plummeted as many have switched to a successor and sold their Phantom 2 since the release of the DJI Phantom 3.

Benefits of the Phantom 2 drone for your GoPro

  • Designed specifically for the use of ActionCams.
  • Now it is a cheap drone with very good performance.

  • The model was released five years ago and therefore has fewer features than much newer drones.

DJI Phantom 2 Specifications

  • Flight time 25 minutes according to the manufacturer’s statement
  • Return to main function
  • Dimensions: 37.4 x 33.6 x 21.4 cm
  • Weight: 1000g
  • 3S Lipo battery

DJI Phantom 3

The Phantom 3 is also ideal for action cameras, as the gimbal has also been designed to work perfectly with such cameras.

For this model, quality is very important, as is usually the case with DJI drones. The Phantom 3 has new features and can fly in FPV mode. In our DJI Phantom 3 Standard test, we hit a top speed of 60 kilometers per hour and a flight time of 25 minutes, which is roughly in line with the manufacturer’s specifications. The Phantom 3 with battery and propeller weighs approximately 1.2 kg.

You will enjoy the Phantom 3 for a long time because the quality pays off in the long run. However, the question arises as to how useful it is to buy, for example, a GoPro camera, and even a Phantom 3. If you have such an affordable budget, we would rather buy a Mavic Pro or Phantom 4 Advanced and forget about GoPro.

Phantom 3 Specifications

  • Weight: 1216g
  • Flight time: 25 minutes
  • Speed: up to 60 kilometers per hour
  • 4480 mAh battery

Benefits of the Phantom 3 drone for your GoPro

Stands very steadily in the air
Great for action cameras

Phantom 3 cons

  • Slightly more expensive when combined with a GoPro.

Cheap drones for GoPro cameras

For around € 100-300, you can purchase drones that are also suitable for action cameras. With some models, however, you’ll have to compromise on performance right after you set up your GoPro. The characteristics of the following drones are sometimes too low for fast and maneuverable flight with additional cameras.

Syma X8C for less than 100 euros

The Syma X8C comes “ready to fly” and is ideal for beginners. So if you’ve never flown a drone and are looking for a very affordable model for your GoPro, then the Syma X8C should be on the final list.

However, for just € 100, don’t expect too much. The flight time is only about 7 minutes and the LiPo 2s battery needs a full 2 hours to charge, so we recommend that you buy at least 2-3 batteries if you want to become this drone. They can be purchased very cheaply from various online stores.

DJI F550 Modular Drone for about 200 €

The DJI F550 is a hexacopter ideal for hobbyists. The kit is available for around € 200 and you can mount your GoPro camera on a finished drone.

The fact is that 6 brushless motors provide enough power to install the ActionCam. However, if you can’t befriend the soldering iron and all the fuss, you might want to go with one of the above GoPro drones. Once you assemble your hexacopter, you will have a high quality drone that is durable, can withstand huge gusts of wind, and is full of high quality materials for a ridiculous price of just 200 euros. It is similar in quality to a drone that costs 400-500 euros assembled.
Parrot AR drone for GoPro cameras

The Parrot AR drone is not officially compatible with a GoPro camera, and does not have a proper gimbal. But as you will see in the next video, you can attach a GoPro to the drone:

Also in this video, in which the GoPro 2 HD was used with a Parrot AR drone:

In terms of quality, the AR drone from the French manufacturer Parrot is close to the DJI Phantom 2, but only in quality and performance. It can be purchased for about 300 euros. A few easy steps will allow you to mount the GoPro of your choice, but no gimbal!

What you need to know about GoPro drones

GoPro has recognized the trend towards launching cameras into the air and will continue to focus more on improving its own GoPro Karma quadrocopter, but also has plans to conquer the multicopter market and develop new aircraft.

If you place a lot of value on having an ActionCam and a drone at the same time, we recommend Karma and stay tuned for the latest drone news as more compatible ATVs and multicopters are coming to the market.

In our experience, the best devices for GoPro cameras are the GoPro Karma and DJI Phantom 3.
