You can view our detailed test report here:
Barracuda 4K Underwater Action Camera Kit
The camera has a maximum resolution of 3840 x 2176 at 25 frames per second, effectively “4K”. But according to the manufacturer, this 4K mode is actually interpolated. Interpolation is an extrapolation of resolution.
Thus, physically the camera is only FullHD, but the image is digitally upscaled to 4K resolution by adding “calculated pixels” (interpolation).
If we talk about the maximum frame rate, then we have 120 frames per second at a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.
An overview of all video mode resolution / frame rate ratios:
- 3840 x 2176 (25fps)
- 2704 x 1536 pixels (30 fps)
- 1920 x 1080 pixels (30/60 fps)
- 1280 x 720 pixels (30/60/120 fps)
Unfortunately, the 170 degree wide-angle lens cannot be adjusted, but it is still a big advantage over other cameras as more image information is captured.
Videos are usually saved in H.264 MP4 format on a micro SD card. Here you can use memory cards up to 64 GB. There are various connectors under the battery cover, including micro HDMI and micro USB.
The recording quality is very good. Pictures and videos look very realistic, not washed out, not too light or too dark. The edges look a little stretched, but this is completely normal due to the wide angle of the camera lens. This takes up a very wide field of view.
However, we recommend shooting preferably in 1920 x 1080 pixel mode, as with 4K and 2.7K you can clearly see that the recorded images are interpolated (extrapolated).
Simple menu navigation and control
The Barracuda’s camera menus are clear enough. However, as with other touch field cameras, you cannot swipe left or right, for example, to change or exit the menu structure.
To open the menu, you need to tap the screen once, then 4 small windows will appear, below which you also need to tap to open the main menu.
In the lower right corner is the settings menu where you can set video modes such as resolution, quality, slow motion, slow motion, white balance, and exposure value (EV). To scroll through a submenu, you cannot simply swipe up or down, you must operate it using the arrow keys.
For example, in the slow motion function, you can choose at what interval the camera should take a picture. The intervals are 0.5, 1, 3, 5, 10, 30 seconds or 1 minute. If you want to create a time-lapse video in this mode, you must ensure that the battery is fully charged.
If the camera turns off in the middle, you will not have any video, but only an empty file, which means that all recordings will be lost. This is of course a problem, because the battery is not enough for several hours of use, a cheap power bank can help.
In general settings, you can set the usual options like language, inverting mode, WiFi password, frequency, and more.
Easypix GoXtreme Barracuda 4K action camera control via smartphone and app
To pair your smartphone with the camera, you need the “iSmart DV” application, which you can download from the application store.
Then you just need to press the “OK” button on the camera a little more to activate the WiFi of the camera. The camera can then be selected and connected in the app.
The images are now transmitted to your smartphone in real time as a live image. However, the transmission time or time delay is about 1-2 seconds. With action cameras in the same price range, this delay is much shorter, so we have to subtract the score here.
The menu navigation and user interface in the app is pretty self-explanatory, and even beginners will find their bearings pretty quickly.
Videos and photos can be viewed directly without having to download files from the camera to the smartphone. When the video is played, they are almost “broadcast”.
WiFi signal strength and charging status (battery symbol) are clearly displayed in the upper right corner of the app. Above is the app menu where you can also set the resolution and frame rate. In the lower right corner, you can select the video, photo and time-lapse mode.

Pros and cons
Now we come to the pros and cons of the Barracuda action camera. Overall, it can be said that the model is very well suited for the hobby, despite some criticism, as you can get it for a fairly low price.
- The Barracuda action camera is waterproof up to 10 meters without a housing – making it ideal for snorkeling, swimming and diving to that depth.
- It has a touchscreen display and an easy-to-use menu structure.
- Numerous accessories, corners and brackets
- Easily connects to smartphone via APP
- Has many recording modes
- Unfortunately, this model does not include a remote control or bracelet.
- The 2.7K and 4K video modes are not as good as some other models, the reason for this is the interpolation of images.
- Delay up to 2 seconds when transferring images to a smartphone in real time
Conclusion: light and shadow
Sure, the manufacturer is not as well known in the field of action cameras as GoPro, but these cameras are also many times more expensive than the Easypix GoXtreme Barracuda.
Unfortunately, the Barracuda has some initial issues, such as a 1-2 second time lag in real-time transmission, or the problem that 4K resolution occurs only through interpolation and therefore does not match the real quality of such a resolution.
However, this is an action camera that you can buy on Amazon for around € 98.
Ideal for amateur photography and video hobbyists.
