We wanted to take a look at an inexpensive Chinese drone from Hubsan. The Hubsan H501S X4 makes a noble impression, so we ordered it directly to make sure the looks are deceiving, or the Hubsan compact drone is really worth the money.

There are 3 different options on the drone market. We have the most expensive white drone for about 250 euros.

GPS, 4 brushless motors and a Full HD camera provide elegant aerial photos and controlled flight behavior. For the price, this quadcopter really does offer a lot!

Based on our test, the Hubsan H501S X4 is really worth the money!

Our video review shows in detail what to expect from a drone:

We’ll take a closer look at these individual flight modes later.

Hubsan H501S X4 Pro drone design and performance

At first glance, the H501S X4 looks very high quality and professionally crafted.

Gold colors adorn the cockpit and propeller. The processed material lends itself slightly, so Hubsan can forgive minor accidents and falls.

The compact Hubsan also fits into almost any backpack. Therefore, it is ideal for photographing and filming on trips or excursions.

There are built-in LEDs that illuminate the quadcopter, but which are not visible in the image or dazzle on them even at dusk.

Including the built-in battery, the Hubsan H501S X4 weighs about 410 grams. You might think that with such a low weight, the drone is more exposed to wind. 4 powerful brushless motors ensure a very stable flight position when GPS is activated. The auto-position retention system is responsible for this.

Thus, the drone is especially suitable for beginners, but also for advanced users who currently have a little less budget and need a new quadcopter.

The 2700 mAh battery lasts for an average flight time of about 20 minutes.

The remote controller has a built-in display that provides you with a high-resolution live FPV image while flying. With this drone, you can fly about 800 meters, but the live image transmission is only enough for 300 meters. Live images are stable and smooth. Minor image errors may occur from time to time, but they are limited and not a cause for concern.

FPV real-time image transmission for this price range makes the Hubsan H501S X4 a very good value for money drone!

Pay attention to the current legal situation in the USA, which states that the drone can only fly within sight!

Hubsan H501S X4 Pro Drone Camera

The H501S X4 Pro drone’s camera records in Full HD, but does not have a mechanical or software gimbal.

The recordings you make with this Hubsan drone are always a little shaky, as you can see in the video above.

Photos are saved in JPEG format to SD card.

Videos are created in Full HD 1920 x 1080 pixels. Unfortunately, as mentioned, the drone does not have a harness, so the images are a little blurry. The absence of a suspension system does not affect the quality of the photo in any way!

Sorry, the SD card is not included in the package. We only worked with SD cards with a memory capacity of about 32 GB. The corresponding slot is on the side.

Photos and videos can be easily transferred to your mobile phone or smartphone, tablet or PC via the USB cable.

Hubsan H501S X4 Pro Battery and Charger

As mentioned, the included battery has a maximum charge of 2,700mAh, which means you have an average of about 20 minutes of flight time, depending on how difficult the drone is during the flight.

20 minutes isn’t much. The battery runs out faster than we would like, so we recommend that you buy multiple battery packs for more fun flying.

Installing the battery and launching the drone takes some getting used to. You have to open the cover on the back of the drone. Here are three cables looking at you. The two blue ones are used to turn on the drone. When connected, the Hubsan H501S X4 is, so to speak, ready to go.

Another cable with a white plug leads to the drone’s battery. It is already installed at the factory, but you can also remove it easily. This connection is used for charging.

If you want to charge the drone, the power adapter must be plugged into a power outlet. Now you need to connect the control box or hub to this power source.

The drone battery as well as the remote control can now be connected to the control unit and charged.

In our test, the 2,700mAh battery was fully charged and ready to go after flying in about 90 minutes. Our remote control battery took 2 to 2.5 hours to charge. Both batteries do not need to be removed from the drone or remote to charge both batteries.

Install the Hubsan H501S X4 Pro Propeller

The H501S X4 Pro drone has 2 different “A” and “B” markings on the grips, the propellers are also marked with two letters. Now they can be easily assembled with the tool. Propeller A belongs to A on the drone and B to B.

The assembly tool is a “trident” that must be held in the air vents above the air vents so that the motors can no longer rotate when the propellers are tightened. You can find detailed instructions in the video above from 3:48 min.

When unscrewing the propellers, make sure they are not attached too tightly, as the threads are subject to excessive stress if they are installed frequently.

Hubsan H501S X4 Pro drone remote control

The remote control makes a simple impression. Data such as flight distance, altitude, GPS data and more are shown on the built-in display.

There are 2 large switches to the right and left of the screen. The left switch is used to turn GPS mode on or off. If GPS is off, the auto position hold system is also disabled. The drone can no longer automatically maintain its flight position and drifts easily.

Therefore, we recommend that you always leave GPS on!

Directly below the left switch is a button for taking pictures while in flight.

The return to home switch is on the right. When pressed, the drone fully automatically returns to the starting point. The starting point is the point from which you first turned on the drone after turning on and taking off. It resets itself after turning on and off and lifting!

The right switch must be turned down for the aircraft to launch.

The trigger to start video recording is located under this right switch.

Using the left joystick, the Hubsan H501S X4 drone can be moved up, down and around its own vertical axis. The right joystick pivots the drone forward, backward, right and left in a horizontal plane.

There are several buttons next to the joysticks, marked with arrows. This allows you to calibrate the drone a little if necessary. However, in our test, we never had to use it.

There are 2 entrances on the left. You can connect your FPV goggles to the
top for an even more spectacular flying experience.

Flight modes

Follow Me Mode

If you insert the right stick into the remote, you will hear two short beeps in quick succession. Follow Me mode is now activated.

Hubsan’s Follow Me function is very good and is integrated into a complex flight system. In Follow Me mode, the aircraft always follows the GPS signal from the remote controller.

This means that you need to carry your remote control so the Hubsan H501S X4 knows where to fly and can follow you.

However, you should avoid sudden changes of direction, because if the drone is about 5-10 meters high and is aimed at you and you change direction very quickly, it will lose you.

One more press will exit this flight mode.

Headless Mode

Pressing the left control stick puts the drone into headless mode.

In headless mode, the Hubsan H501S X4 can fly regardless of the orientation of the drone’s head.

For example, in headless mode, it will always fly forward as soon as the right stick is moved forward, regardless of whether the drone’s head is pointing towards you, away or away from you.

When flying in headless mode, we noticed that the drone is a little more restless in the air than usual.

Return to home mode

We were amazed at the reliable Return Home mode. When you turn on the mode, the drone immediately begins to return to the starting point.

For Return to Home to work very well, it is necessary to guarantee a connection with 7 neighboring satellites, because only then can the drone find its exact home point (starting point of departure) and land there with sufficient accuracy.

In our drone test, the Hubsan landed about 2 meters from the home point. What excellent specs for a drone at this price point.

Hubsan H501S X4 drone calibration

Before the first start-up, the remote will inform you that you need to calibrate the compass. Calibrating Compass 1 will turn yellow on the screen.

You can quickly and easily perform calibration as follows:

The drone must first be rotated around its own axis in the horizontal direction. Until the LEDs stop flashing not red, but green.

Then the display will show “Caliber compass 2”. Now the drone needs to be rotated around its own axis to a vertical position. Until the opposite LEDs turn blue and purple.

If the aircraft does not display either Calib Compass 1 or Calib Compass 2, the compass is calibrated and you can take off.

To launch the drone, move the left and right joysticks downward and outward. The Hubsan drone then fires up its brushless motors and you can finally take off!

Conclusion on the Hubsan H501S X4 Pro drone

In our opinion, the drone is suitable for both beginners and advanced users due to its simple and reliable operation. The low price, high performance speaks in favor of the Hubsan H501S X4 Pro and you should shortlist it when purchasing.

In this price range, the picture and video quality is pretty good. The only problem is the lack of a gimbal system. The recordings will always be slightly blurry because the aircraft is moving them in the air and the small movements are not mechanically or software balanced!

This aircraft is less suited for demanding drone pilots who value very high image quality. Here we recommend the more expensive but very high quality 4K drones from DJI.

Once you have mastered all the features and settings, it will be a lot of fun to fly your drone outdoors. Just watch our test video above.

For around € 250, you can get a really good drone with which you can shoot yourself from above on vacation, at home or outdoors.
