We have already tested several drones from Parrot. The French manufacturer recently announced that another quadcopter can be expected soon. It is a 4-propeller-driven foldable aircraft with a 21 megapixel camera sensor that delivers incredibly detailed images in true Ultra HD, i.e. 4096 x 2160 pixels.

Previously, the manufacturer was known in the drone market primarily for the Parrot Bebop 1 and 2, as well as some mini and entry-level drones. Although the products have always kept their promises and the quality has been in good proportion to the price, testers and buyers of the large Bebop 2 drone have criticized from time to time.

In particular, the camera sensor has been significantly improved over the bebop. Here you can watch our test video of the Parrot Anafi drone:

Brief overview of technical data

The drone can reach a top speed of about 53 km / h. It is slightly lighter than the Parrot Bebop 2 and weighs only 320 g, but it can easily handle wind speeds up to 50 km / h.

When unfolded, the Anafi Drone has the following external dimensions: 175x240x65 mm. The design is somewhat reminiscent of the DJI Mavic, which can be folded. This is exactly what the new Parrot drone is capable of. When folded, it has the following dimensions: 244x67x65mm. When folded, it fits into almost any backpack or bag.

With a 2700mAh smart flight battery, you can achieve 25 minutes of flight time on a single charge. The dual-band operating frequency 2.4 and 5.8 GHz provides a range of up to 4 km with the Skycontroller 3. Without this controller, only via smartphone control, a maximum range of up to 350 meters is possible. However, you must comply with the current German laws, because they say that the drone can only fly within sight and at altitudes up to 100 meters!

This drone weighs over 250g, so you will need a fireproof license plate with your details (name, surname and current home address) to be able to fly it legally in the USA. You can create such a drone license plate and deliver it to the internet inexpensively. Anafi drone does not require a drone license, it is only needed with a takeoff weight of 2kg.

This new quadrocopter from Parrot does not have the special obstacle detection that many DJI devices do. So you should definitely try to avoid collisions. However, if an accident does occur, don’t worry, this model is also made of a particularly durable material.

We’ve already had several crashes with the Parrot Bebop 2, as well as the smaller flight models of the French manufacturer. We find Parrot drones to be very lenient over and over again. It’s the same with the Anafi Drone because it is made of extra strong carbon fiber reinforced material, which is also why it is lightweight.

The remote is the Parrot Skycontroller 3, which appears to be the successor to the Skycontroller 2 that was used to control the Bebop 2. The design is the same, the design of the remote has remained largely unchanged. The third-generation controller now looks a little sportier and probably sits better in the hand than its predecessor.

From above you can screw a holder for a smartphone or tablet. To launch the drone, the smartphone must be compatible with the Parrot app. Then, as usual, the app has numerous data on the current state of the Anafi Drone and various settings. However, various features, such as Follow-Me mode, are still not available for free, but behind a paid wall. You have to buy this feature in the app.

Features of Anafi Drone

Operator mode is an assistant for creating all kinds of video recordings from a bird’s eye view. This should be understood to mean that you can move your index finger over an object, which the camera then automatically frames and holds in focus.

The only thing the pilot needs to do is fly the drone in the air and, if necessary, fly after the object. This feature is very new and probably represents something of a preparatory stage for Follow-Me mode.

Various other modes and functions are provided for the camera such as Boomerang, Orbit, Dolly Zoom, Tornado and Parabola. There is also the ability to record video in a movie style The 4K camera provides the right format and resolution for this. There are other modes for this, such as Epic, Reveal, Rise and 360 degrees.

Photo and video quality

A quality 4K camera with 4096 x 2160 pixels is simply amazing. It has 4K resolution, and the quality of photos and videos is at a very high level. Images and videos are not pixelated, there are no image errors, and even at dusk you can still make good recordings and see everything very well. Contrast, sharpness and color depth are more than excellent for a drone with a camera in this price range and are ideal for personal use.

If you want to zoom in with your camera, you don’t have to sacrifice image sharpness. Thanks to the 21-megapixel photo sensor, which works with special software, the image is enlarged by interpolation. For video recordings, the frame rate does not depend on the magnification, but on the resolution. At the highest resolution, you have up to 60fps, and at 1080p, you have about 60fps.

A maximum magnification of 3x is common. However, this is really lossless only up to a certain scaling range. The lossless scaling factor also depends on the resolution. That’s around 1.4 in 4K recordings and 2.8 in Full HD.

The videos are very clear and have very good dynamics thanks to data transfer rates up to 100 Mbps. Of course you need a lot of memory. Unfortunately, the place for the memory card is under the battery. You can insert a 16 gigabyte SD card there. However, we find this solution a bit impractical. The place for the memory card could have been chosen more intelligently.

The special gimbal system of the Anafi drone has been successful. It is installed so that you can shoot the bridge from below, as the camera can be rotated more than 180 degrees in the vertical direction. However, the rotor blades are never displayed and therefore cannot interfere with flight.

Image stabilization occurs on 3 axes and provides particularly balanced video recording. Even if you do extreme maneuvers with the Anafi, the videos look as if the drone is always horizontal. It would be especially cool if Parrot built in a panorama function here. Unfortunately, there is no such function on this model. But that’s exactly what made sense because of the 180-degree rotatable camera.

Flight characteristics and battery life

Especially with a budget of a few € 100, flight performance and battery life should not fall below a certain lower quality limit. However, during testing, we were able to determine that the Anafi drone is very safe and relaxed in the air, even at higher wind speeds. Fast maneuvers are also possible and the quadcopter easily balances all gusts of wind. The flight behavior seems to be very maneuverable and is somewhat reminiscent of the DJI Mavic Pro, which we have already detailed in one of our test series.

Anafi makes the hearts of experienced drone pilots beat faster. However, beginners can run into problems due to the lack of obstacle detection. However, obstacle detection, which is very well implemented in terms of software and hardware, costs a lot of money. As a rule, such a system is only used for expensive drones from 1000 €. If you have little experience with flying, we recommend that you practice only in the field or other large open space at first. If you’re looking for a cheaper entry-level model, we can also recommend the Hubsan drone, which is extremely good value for money.

The battery has a capacity of 2,700 mAh and due to the drone’s light weight (only 320 g) the effective flight time is only 24 minutes. It can be charged via an external battery, laptop or in the car. However, the problem we could see here is that the charging time is extremely long and is around 2.5 hours. Even with a Parrot quick charge, it takes about 105 minutes to charge. T
herefore, we recommend that you buy some additional flight batteries to be independent of the charge level of your battery. In our opinion, the purchase of additional batteries is definitely worth it!

Scope of delivery Anafi

The completeness of Anafi is average. The kit contains everything you need to put the drone into operation. Included:

  • 1 x Parrot Anafi drone
  • 1 x remote control
  • 2 x propellers
  • 1x Skycontroller 3
  • 1x shipping box
  • 1x 16 GB microSD card
  • 1x USB-A to USB-C cable
  • 1x assembly tool

If a 16GB SD card isn’t enough for you, you can also switch to a 32GB SD card. To fly with Anafi you will still need a suitable device, usually a smartphone or tablet.

Advantages and disadvantages of the new Parrot drone

You can get the Parrot Anafi for around € 700 on Amazon *, of course the current starting price is a disadvantage. The cost of new products, of course, is always the highest, but prices usually fall over time. After a year, it will be available for € 600 or less. We have collected for you the biggest advantages and disadvantages in the review:

  • Very high quality workmanship
  • Reaches high speed up to 53 km / h
  • Powerful camera sensor with high recording quality
  • The camera can be tilted 180 degrees, i.e. 90 degrees down and 90 degrees up
  • Very quiet, 10 dB quieter than the DJI Mavic Air
  • Wide customization options and functions
  • Anafi drone is a foldable, ideal travel drone
  • Cool design and very stable
  • The drone can finally be charged via an external battery

  • Unfortunately, the charging time is at least 2.5 hours.
  • Images sometimes look jerky when traversing an object, so hopefully there will be an update from Parrot.
  • Additional features such as Follow-Me are only available at an additional cost.
  • No built-in obstacle detection

Conclusion on the Parrot Anafi drone

Excellent flight characteristics and a very powerful camera make the Parrot Anafi an absolute all-rounder for me. Despite its light weight, the quadcopter stands as if chiseled in the air.

Thanks to its foldable design, the Parrot Anafi is especially suitable for the leisure and filmmaker who often needs a small, compact and reliable drone. In our opinion, Parrot has done a great job here and the model is definitely worth its € 700.

The lack of obstacle detection did not bother me personally as I now have some experience with flying drones. If that’s important to you, of course, you should take a look at DJI’s Mavic Air or Mavic Pro, both of which add up as well.

Parrt Anafi is currently very cheap to buy on Amazon *.

Anafi drone alternatives for beginners

Not everyone looking for an entry-level drone is at the right address in Anafi. The price scares off many newbies. For around € 200, you can get good entry-level drones in this class. The Hubsan X4 H501S FPV brushless quadcopter has a high quality camera, GPS and many modes that can also be used to fly expensive aircraft. Based on our test, this drone is really worth the money and doesn’t spend too much on the budget.

Mini drones like the Parrot Mambo or Airborne are even cheaper and can be purchased for less than 100 euros. However, such drones have less powerful cameras or no cameras at all. However, these flying machines are a lot of fun and can be flown indoors. Mini drones are also significantly more resilient and forgiving. So perfect for every beginner.

Another Parrot drone we’ve tested extensively is the Parrot Bebop 2. This is one of our favorite drones and you can get it for less than € 500. The FPV function is especially popular in combination with FPV Parrot Bebop 2 goggles. However, in this model it also happens that some modes, such as the Follow-Me function, do not work. You need to reactivate advanced features in the app by paying a certain amount. However, prices are limited.
