With the Parrot Bebop 2, French manufacturer Parrot promises breathtaking aerial photography, easy handling and stable flight behavior even in strong gusts of wind.

In our Parrot Bepop 2 test, we took a close look at the drone.

The Parrot Bebop 2 is a lightweight and compact video drone that weighs 500g and provides a flight time of just under 25 minutes. Videos are recorded in Full HD format and stabilized by the company’s own software. The drone does not have a mechanical gimbal, but an electronic 3-axis image stabilization.

It is especially suitable for beginners thanks to its extensive touch technology. Bebop can be controlled using a smartphone or tablet and the corresponding app.

The following video shows our full test report:

Features of Parrot Bebop 2

The supplied FPV goggles provide a more realistic flight experience.

You can see what the drone sees through the glasses, and this makes it feel like you are flying in the drone yourself.

Pre-programmed acrobatic stunts such as somersaults can be performed through the app.

In our drone test, the Bebop 2 reached 72 km / h with a slight tailwind. In the absence of wind, a maximum speed of up to 60 km / h is possible.

Parrot Bebop 2 review

The drone starts and lands at the touch of a button.

The drone can always reliably return to the starting point using Home Mode and GPS. Due to its light weight, only 500 g, it is very fast, maneuverable and maneuverable in the air.

Flying with this drone is a lot of fun, and with FPV (first person view) flying drones have taken it to the next level.

The Parrot Bebop 2 can be controlled either with the Parrot Skycontroller or independently with a smartphone, but the range is limited.

Skycontroller 2We tested the Parrot Bebop 2 with Parrot Skycontroller 2 and FPV goggles.

Range up to 2000 meters is possible with this controller.

If you’re in the mood for more, you can also get the larger Skycontroller, which is bigger, fits better in your hand and comes with a lot of buttons and features.

The USA has a law that a drone can only fly within sight. Thanks to the large, illuminated red LED on the back, Bebop 2 can be recognized even from a distance.

From about 200 m you can see them worse and worse.

If the drone is controlled only via a smartphone without a Skycontroller, the range is limited to approximately 300 meters.

Image quality

With the camera, you can take pictures with a resolution of up to 14 megapixels and videos in Full HD. Unfortunately, the drone only has 8GB of internal storage.

Every 1-2 flights you have to clear the memory to make room for new records!

Lots of great experiences, great photos and good videos, for example from vacation, can also be assembled with the Parrot Bebop 2.

Using the right wheel on the controller, you can set the ISO value and therefore the sensitivity of the camera. Make sure this is set optimally. Otherwise, the images will be recorded too light or too dark.

Image stabilization

The camera image can be controlled vertically using the left wheel of the controller.

However, the camera itself does not physically move as it has fisheye optics.

In addition, it does not have a mechanical gimbal system, but instead compensates for drone movements using image processing software.

This calculates a slice from a 180 degree wide angle perspective.

Sometimes this leads to small image errors at the edges, which are practically invisible in the pictures and do not bother us so much.

Battery and flight time

The drone’s battery has a charging capacity of 2,700mAh and lasts for about 23-25 minutes depending on how you use the Bebop 2.Compared to the previous model, which had a flight time of only about 11 minutes, this is a real step forward.

How stable is the Parrot Bebop 2

On one of our test flights, we accidentally flew a Bebop 2 into a tree during an FPV flight. However, only one rotor was slightly damaged in the process, but we were still able to continue to steer the drone stably without any problems.

In addition, when attempting to land on a sun lounger, the drone crashed into a lattice rock from a height of about 1.5m. The Bebop 2 now has a slight scratch on its body, but is still fully functional.

The drone is very gentle, but if something breaks, you can order the corresponding parts from the manufacturer.

Parrot Bebop 2 included

The Parrot Bebop 2 comes with 2 sets of propellers for a total of 8, of which 4 are white and 4 are black.

Two propellers of different colors must always be installed in pairs or the drone will not take off.

Also included in the package is a charging station, 1 battery, various adapters and a propeller attachment.

If you opt for the FPV package with SkyController 2, you also get FPV goggles, a USB cable and controller, and a smartphone and tablet holder.

Parrot FreeFlight Pro App

In the app, basic motion settings such as maximum horizontal and vertical speed, turn rate, maximum flight altitude and tilt angle are set very slowly to ensure easy entry for every beginner.

As a beginner, you should gradually get closer to speed and set the limits only higher with increasing flying experience. However, you will quickly feel at home in the Bebop 2 and feel safe in flight.

At the latest, when you have reached the limits, you do not need anything else.

The application provides not only the camera image, but also detailed flight data such as current altitude, speed and battery level of the drone and remote control.

Flight plan

Flight Plan is an update to the Parrot app that allows GPS data to be used to keep the drone flying on specific routes.

This way you can show the drone via Google Maps where it should fly while it is recording video. The Bebop 2 flies this route reliably and completely autonomously.

If you would like to receive this update, please note that the legal situation in the USA stipulates that the drone can only fly within line of sight!

Parrot Cloud

Current flights are saved in the Parrot Cloud.

Among other things, it shows where you flew, how many accidents there were, how much battery power was consumed during the flight and the flight time.

The GPS route can also be displayed graphically. In addition, you can view additional graphics, for example, the graph can display the current charge status, flight altitude and the speed that the Bebop 2 is developing.

Selected drone data that can be viewed

If you click on your Bebop 2’s drone name in the app, an overview will open where you can view the status of the drone. Among other things, whether the propellers and motors are working properly (then they are displayed in green), what is the battery level and what version of the hardware and software it has.

It is also very interesting that the number of flights and hours of operation are displayed.

Consider this when selling used products!

Because this data is stored in the drone itself and is called by the application. Even if you reinstall the app, the work hours are not reset!

If the app is connected to the drone, you can also access the memory and view videos and photos on your smartphone after downloading it.

You can also download content to your tablet or smartphone and then clear Dohne’s memory to make room for new recordings, since it’s only 8GB.

Controlling the Bebop 2 using the app

In joystick mode, the left touchpad can be us
ed to move the aircraft up and down vertically.

This field is also used to rotate the drone around its own axis to the left and right.

On the right touch field, it is possible to move the drone horizontally forward, backward, right or left, sideways.

The control in the app is structured like any other standard drone control.

When the 2 touch surfaces are released, the Bebop 2 stabilizes in the air. The drone app ensures safe and comfortable flight.

You can switch between live video and map view using the bottom left button.

At the bottom right is the FPV button. Here the picture is automatically set by the application so that our smartphone can be used with FPV goggles.

At the bottom middle, the Takeoff or Landing button can be used to take off and land the drone.

The button at the top right is used for taking pictures. During video recording, you can also take photos using this button, but then the quality will be much worse.

The other button to the left of it is used to perform certain drone maneuvers, such as forward and backward flips.

Immediately to the left of it is the Return to Home button. As soon as you press it, the drone will fly to where you launched it.

However, this feature is only available if there is a stable GPS connection to the Bebop 2 at the start and at the current time. You can see if your GPS is available by the arrow in the lower right corner (green = good GPS signal).

In the application itself, you can search for the latest updates so that you can always download the latest software to the drone.

If an update is available, the smartphone downloads the data and transfers it to the Bebop 2.

Parrot Bebop 2 FPV

Parrot Bebop 2 FPV goggles provide more realistic flight. It sits very comfortably, not too heavy (about 390g without a smartphone) and you won’t have any pain in your face or nose even after 25 minutes of flight.

FPV goggles

As soon as the smartphone is connected to the controller via a USB cable, the application starts automatically.

Then you need to turn on the drone, establish a connection between the Bebop 2 and the remote controller, and start FPV mode.

The smartphone serves as a display for the glasses. Now a rectangular image is created with 2 lenses.

According to the manufacturer, the following smartphones are supported:

  • Samsung Galaxy (S5, S6, S7, Note 3, Note 4, Note 5)
  • Nexus 5
  • iPhone (6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus)
  • LG (G3, G4)
  • HTC One M8

Note: Many other models with a screen diagonal of 4.7 to 5.7 inches and a thickness of 6 to 9.5 mm will also fit in our test.

If you have such a smartphone, it will also fit into the slot and will be able to convey the best experience of flying with glasses.

With your smartphone aligned in the holder, select the ideal exit pupil distance for a clear image.

Make sure the goggles fit securely on your head and you are ready to fly.

At first, flying with glasses is a bit weird.

For beginners, we recommend that you do not immediately set the settings in the application such as maximum speed and tilt angle, but rather practice a little with the basic settings at the factory.

The app and its menus can be accessed using the controller while the Parrot Cockpitglasses are running. Here you can switch between the Bebop 2 camera and the smartphone camera.

This means that the area in front of the goggles can be viewed without putting them on, which can be very useful for certain maneuvers such as taking off and landing a drone.

If this is your first time flying in FPV mode, don’t fly that far. As an inexperienced drone pilot, you quickly become disoriented in your goggles with respect to your starting point.

When flying in FPV mode, distances are also quickly mistaken.

The drone can be lifted using the home function if needed. To do this, there is a button in the lower left corner of the remote control.
