We took a close look at the Typhoon Q500 4K drone from Yuneec because, according to network research, it supposedly has a really good camera and should deliver great images without hesitation.
Shortly after placing the order, the plane arrived by mail well packed in a large suitcase.
If you love going on vacation and want to take your drone with you, you should free up space in your car.
In our test, the Typhoon Q500 4K made a particular impression on us in terms of resolution, quality and smoothness of live images.
For 700-800 euros in stores like www.amazon.com you can get the best drone with a high quality remote control with built-in screen.
If you want to get a visual idea of the device, you can just watch our presentation of the Typhoon Q500 4K drone on YouTube.
In the test, we were primarily interested in taking a closer look at the camera image and image transmission. We also tested flight characteristics, speed and stability in the air.
The device was compared directly with other drones and whether the Typhoon Q500 4K is really as good as you can read on other test portals.
Review – Is the Typhoon Q500 4K worth the money?
Let’s start right away with the test report. Typhoon Q500 does not require synchronization with the smartphone app, as with many other drones!
Instead, the camera transmits live images directly to the remote control.
It is equipped with a high quality display that delivers exceptionally clear images smoothly and smoothly. Compared to other devices in this price range, image transmission and stability are excellent!
It is very suitable for photography and aerial photography where quality is required!
During long-distance flight, we felt completely safe, as the image appeared on the display without delay and made it possible to fly carefree according to the image on the remote control.
It offers many customization options, including multiple flight modes and speed levels.
Flight stability and maneuverability are good, but average. This is because the Typhoon Q500 weighing over 1130g (without battery) is slightly heavier than the lighter competitors in its price range.
Here are some more criticisms:
- High resolution camera
- Uninterrupted image transmission
- Ease of handling
- High quality display
- Extensive accessories
- 20-25 minutes flight per battery
- Large suitcase
- Drone dimensions
- Heavy weight
As you can see in the aerial photos, the drone is quite stable in the air despite its size and weight, and takes very good pictures.
Compared to other drones
With frame rates up to 120fps, the Typhoon Q500 4K has an almost unique edge in the drone market.
Chinese manufacturer Yuneec deliberately launched a 4K-resolution aircraft to position itself.
With an image monitoring system integrated into the remote control and SteadyGrip, which also makes it easy to make terrestrial recordings, this drone offers two unique advantages.
For recording on the ground, you can remove the camera from the drone and put it on the SteadyGrip and shoot regular videos without the drone.
Compared to the DJI Phantom 3, the Typhoon Q500 4K is slightly more awkward in the air.
However, if you don’t want to set speed records and just want to take beautiful pictures, the Typhoon Q500 4K is the right choice.
Remote control and display
The remote fits comfortably in your hand. You feel safe when you fly, it is not too heavy, light and not too big.
Below is an overview of the most important drone controls:
# 1 Left stick
With the left stick you fly the Typhoon Q500 just like any other drone.
Forward or Down: The drone goes up or down.Stick moves left or right: the aircraft rotates around its own axis.
# 2 photo shutter
If you want to capture this Lifestream image on the display, simply press this shutter button and the image will be saved to the SD card.
# 3 Start / Stop Button
This button starts the drone and stops the engines after landing.
# 4 On / off switch on the remote control
By pushing the switch up, you start the remote control.
# 5 modes
With this lever, you change the individual flight modes, you will learn more about this later.
# 6 start video
If you press this switch, the drone camera will start recording from it. The data is saved on an SD card, which can then be easily transferred to a PC or laptop.
# 7 right stick
Right stick moves the aircraft horizontally. If you move the lever forward, backward, right or left, the drone flies in that direction.
# 1 Charge the remote control battery
Make sure that the battery in the remote control is never too low, otherwise the radio communication may be damaged.
# 2 Charge the drone battery
The drone can fly for up to 25 minutes on a fully charged battery. The warning signal is visible as soon as the load drops below a certain value, so you can land in time.
# 3 height
This specification in meters represents the relative altitude based on the drone’s trigger point.
# 4 speed
The speed is indicated in kilometers per hour, in English: in kilometers per hour and therefore in “km / h”. This means the relative speed over the ground.
# 5 distance
Here you can see how far the drone is now.
# 6 headphone input
For headphones and headset.
# 7 USB input
The remote controller of the drone can be charged via the micro USB input.
The battery lasts for about 4 flights every 20-25 minutes. At least in our test, it took so long.
After 4 flights, we strongly recommend charging the remote.

The data show
s that this is a very high quality drone, which is especially suitable for video and photography.
Below we would like to highlight some of the dimensions to give you a better overview.
The weight of the drone without a camera, battery and without additional load is 1130 g. However, the camera also weighs 185 g. Then there is a battery.
All in all, you get a takeoff weight of 1,700g, which means the drone is not as fast and maneuverable as a lighter aircraft.
Video resolution and image quality
Video resolution – 4096 x 2160 pixels. Compared to other drones we tested, we found this drone to be one of the best image quality in this price segment.
It is possible to record video and take screenshots / photos in flight. The trigger for this is on the remote control.
There are 3 flight modes in total:
If the drone is in corner mode, it will move through the air exactly where you move the stick, starting at the tip of the drone.
This way, if the tip is pointing at you and you move the right stick on the remote forward, it will fly towards you.
In smart mode, the drone always moves in the direction that the joystick is moved, regardless of the position of the drone tip.
In this mode, it doesn’t matter if the Typhoon Q500 4K tip is pointing towards you or away from you, it will move away from your position as you move the handle forward.
If the drone is set to home mode, it will return to its original launch point no matter where it is.
The maximum flight height is 122 meters. However, this is only the limit set by the manufacturer.
The drone is “reset” every time it is launched. Therefore, 122 m is a relative size, it depends on where the Typhoon Q500 4K started from.
For example, if you are standing on a tower 200 meters high and the drone takes off from it, the take-off height is 0 meters.
However, for safety reasons, there is a programmed height limit that must not be exceeded. It is about 2500 meters above sea level.
In the mountains, the plane can no longer be launched from 2500 meters!
Pay attention to the legal framework!
The FPV signal has a frequency of 5.8 GHz. FPV stands for first-person flight. The image transmission quality is so good that you can only observe and control the drone through the screen without any problems. (First person perspective)
Unfortunately there are no FPV goggles for this model.
The remote control offers you another customization option to directly influence the performance of the motors and therefore the maneuverability.
There is a lever on the right side of the remote that can be moved smoothly and the drone can be switched between turtle and rabbit modes.
We think that this way the drone can be well adjusted, especially for beginners, since the joystick movements in turtle mode have less impact on the Typhoon Q500’s tilt angle.
The propellers can be simply screwed on like any other drone.
There are 2 different types of propellers:
Propeller “A” and propeller “B”.
This is because the 2 propellers facing each other rotate in opposite directions to provide stability and at the same time create lift. Therefore, they have a different geometry.
When unscrewing the propellers, make sure you tighten them correctly, otherwise they may loosen in flight!
Conclusion on the Typhoon Q500 4K drone
The recordings of our test flights were surprisingly good. For the price, the Typhoon Q500 4K definitely makes a very good impression.
According to our drone test, it is worth your money anyway. The camera and image transmission have been significantly improved compared to the previous model.
The best camera is when amateur photographers can decide to buy this aircraft.
We found the drone not suitable for speed enthusiasts. For risky, daring and fast maneuvers and races, check out the DJI drone.
What we liked the most was the easy operation and live image transmission.
Smooth images are displayed live without delay on the remote control screen in high definition. A real plus!
Even much more expensive devices for the most part cannot perform better, but they have more complex flight characteristics.
This drone is available on Amazon.de for around € 700-800.
In the video above, we have put together the most important things for you again. Find out more before buying a drone at this price point.
Compared to the DJI Phantom 3, the drone is quite large. The box the drone is packed in is also sizeable and takes up a lot of space in the car.
Last but not least, Yuneec’s Typhoon Q500 4K drone is a classic entry-level product for people keen on high-quality video recording and photography.
