Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has released a new model that represents a real milestone in their company’s history.

Because with the Xiaomi Mi action camera, the brand can withstand the competition. The camera is not only cheap but also equipped with high technology. What to expect and what image and video quality it has, you will learn from this report.

The Xiaomi Mi is a real treat because, despite its low price, it delivers 4K resolution, has a 1450mAh battery, and therefore can create long videos in the highest resolution format.

The camera is quite compact and fits in your pocket. It measures just 71.62mm x 42.80mm x 29.75mm and weighs just 98.60g.

There is a rather large touchscreen on the back. It has a Gnaze 960 x 480 pixels. This size is not typical for action cameras and, in our opinion, is a big plus.

A microphone and even a speaker are fixed above the camera. The quality of these elements is fully consistent with the price. Usually you shouldn’t expect too much from an action camera microphone in this price range, with the Xiaomi Mi action camera the recordings are fine, but not so good either.

It is also possible to connect a second microphone, for this there is a corresponding socket on the left side of the camera. Next to it is a micro USB slot.

Image sensor, resolution and memory

Front camera

A fairly modern chipset “Ambarella A12S75” is installed, which produces video bitrate up to 60 Mbps and up to 30 frames per second with 4K resolution.

The following resolutions are available in video format:

  • 4K (3840 x 2160) @ 30fps
  • 1440p (2560 x 1440) @ 30fps (requires less storage space)
  • Full HD (1920 x 1080) @ 100 or 60 fps
  • HD (1280 x 720) @ 200fps

Unfortunately, the matrix resolution is only 8 megapixels, so the photos are not of the best quality. However, 8 MP is enough to create good 4K videos. It uses a Sony IMX 317 sensor.

The lens has a 145 degree wide angle lens. Images have been stretched “in width” with distortion correction and look completely normal.

For memory, you can use a microSD card up to 64 GB.

We recommend formatting the memory card before use and not using larger cards as this can lead to various problems!

Recordings can also be saved in RAW format.

Menu navigation and recording modes

The manufacturer has simplified menu navigation. The menu is clearly structured, doesn’t seem too cluttered, and you can get your bearings quickly.

Among other things, you can select various recording modes such as slow motion recording.

However, compared to the competition, you have to say that the slow-motion frame rate is 200fps maximum, not 240fps like other cameras.

However, this frame rate is also sufficient to be able to create beautiful videos in this mode without losing the “smoothness” of the sequence of images.

The time-lapse feature is also really cool, and thanks to its long battery life, it can also be used wisely. Here, the camera takes pictures at intervals you specify and combines them directly into the video.

Battery and run time

The Xianomi Mi Action Camera 4K clearly wins here. Because it can run for up to 120 minutes even at the highest resolution and 30 frames per second. That’s a heck of a lot compared to other cameras in this price range.

Other manufacturers’ models often have a smaller battery, the Xiamo Mi uses a 1450mAh battery.

It takes about the same amount of time to charge the cam battery as it does in one go, that is, about 2 hours.

However, there is one drawback regarding the camera battery, which is that there are currently no replaceable batteries for this model, but perhaps the manufacturer will rethink this and bring additional batteries to the market.

How good is the image quality?

Xiao Mi in practice

For the price, the image recordings are quite good, although only 8 megapixels are used here, they are quite enough for use as an ActionCam.

3D noise reduction is also integrated, which provides better image quality, especially when shooting at dusk or in low light conditions.

Since digital recordings are available in RAW format, they can also be processed with good image processing software.

To ensure image quality that is even better than the competition, the manufacturer has integrated distortion correction and digital image stabilization. These features only apply to videos up to 30fps and Full HD.

Application control

The Xiaomi Mi camera can be connected to a smartphone via WiFi. The manufacturer has developed a really good app for this.

Mi Home app is compatible with Android and iOS devices. To do this, at least the following versions must be installed on your device: Android 4.0 or higher, iOS 8.0 or higher.

The live image from the camera is transmitted directly to your smartphone, and you can also control and configure the camera directly through the app.

The connection uses a 2.4 GHz WLAN signal.

scope of delivery

The scope of delivery leaves much to be desired, unfortunately, the kit does not include such accessories as a tripod, etc., you will have to buy them separately. Some online retailers offer complete accessory kits for this model.

Thus, the standard package contains only the following parts:

  • Xiaomi Mi 4K Action Camera
  • Battery 1450 mAh
  • Charging cable
  • Operating instructions (unfortunately only in Chinese)

Pros and cons

For this price, you get a pretty good action camera, unfortunately we can not report anything about the long term experience as the camera is not long on the market.

  • High-quality images and footage thanks to sophisticated chipset and state-of-the-art matrix
  • You can use memory cards up to 64 GB
  • Large, high-resolution touchscreen display with simple menu structure
  • Digital image stabilization
  • Distortion Correction
  • Noise reduction (3D)
  • Images are available in RAW format for post-processing
  • Wi-Fi function (can also be controlled via the app from a smartphone)
  • There is a self-timer
  • Cool and modern design
  • Long battery life – up to 2 hours at 4K and 30fps

  • No spare batteries
  • Several accessories as standard
  • Sound quality is poor

The real advantage is the low price of the Xiaomi Mi action camera, but this quickly becomes apparent due to the fact that there is not a large set of accessories in the standard package.
